Abstract:
A crisis is an instance where something or someone is dealing with one or
more extremely significant issues.
Similarly, language contributes
significantly to social crises. 'Language crisis' is the name given to it.
Nevertheless, language is a crucial component of human communication and
one of the main forms of oral, written, and physical (signed) expression.
According to the Sri Lankan context, the main spoken and official languages
are Sinhala and Tamil, with English being referred to as the "link language"
in this multilingual nation. So, since Sri Lanka is a multiethnic nation, it is
important to be bilingualism or trilingualism in Sri Lanka most of the time.
But does the organization or the government adhere to it? Furthermore,
spelling mistakes are common in Sri Lankan public places, such as on
billboards, application forms, and even social media descriptive posts. Why
did that happen? By using mixed methods such as qualitative and quantitative
methods this study will be carried forward. By using random sampling
interviews and social media analysis this study will basically focus on. To
identify how effectively bilingualism or trilingualism is being used in our
country's context as a multi-language country. Also, to analyze how carelessly
the spelling mistakes have been continuing in public posters, etc.
Nevertheless, to identify what causes these errors to continue in our
community. According to the data, it shows that trilingualism hasn't been used
properly, not in all places however in a few places it is there. Moreover, due
to the carelessness, illiteracy of a second language spelling mistakes are still
happening in many situations. Therefore, it is important to foster successful
communication, language literacy, and cultural understanding in Sri Lanka to
reduce the impact of the language crisis further.
