Abstract:
Butsarana is considered as the incomparable
Sinhalese Prose. It was written by
Vidyachkkravarti at the end of the 12th century
A. D or at the beginning of the13th century
A. D. Butsarana reflects a developed stage
of the Sinhala language and literature. By
the time, when Butsarana was written, the
Sinhalese language had developed with some
characteristics peculiar to it alone. The extent
of the evolution of the syntax during the period
from the 10th century A. D. to 13th century A. D.
is remarkably significant when we compare the
changes that took place in the subsequent period
that is until about the 18th century A.D. This is
an analysis of syntactical feature in Butsarana.
This is an analyzis of syntactical features of the
12th and the 13th centuries which reflex through
Butsarana. Prof. Wimal G. Balagalle’s method
and Mr. Munidasa Kumarathunga’s method have
been used to analyze the sentences in Butsarana.
The sentence structure which reflexes at the end
of the 12th century A. D or at the beginning of
the13th century A. D. can be identified through
this research.
